the new caad10.

cannondale_caad10

the new, cannondale caad10.  new features include: not being assembled in the USA anymore (bummer…), a 1/4″ tapered headset, wider seat cluster area, thinner seatstays, and a flatter seat tube near the bottom bracket apparently to help with the dampening of the bike.  also notice the reinforced downtube near the headset area, I bet this bike is super stiff and responsive.  cannondale has definitely stepped up their aluminum game.  big improvements over the caad9.

bummer their now made in taiwan.  but all their new stuff is now, including my supersix.  oh well, times change.  the frameset is still sick though, I’d love to have one in the berserker green, or magnesium white.

convention status.

9-20_san-francisco

jamming on the bmx bike has it’s advantages.  the short wheelbase and high bottom bracket mean you can snap the bike around pedestrians walking to…let’s say, a big convention that blocks off a major city street like harrison.  I was actually oblivious to the big event riding to work today, but noticed it had grown significantly larger near rush hour.  cars were funneled from 4 lanes to 3 on 3rd street, which meant for bumper to bumper for quite a long time.  luckily, riding a bicycle downtown does have it’s perks.

sore legs from doing a short, intense leg workout, off the bike.  I plan on grabbing a fluid trainer soon though, need to get in some good base hours/miles before the season starts.  I only want to ride the trainer when it’s inconvenient to ride outdoors.  say for example, before (or after) work and when it’s raining outside.  getting out to marin is sometimes a hassle when there’s morning traffic.  plus I’d have to ride 12 miles out just to hit muir woods.  doing it later in the day means bright lights or bust.  we’ll see what happens.  I miss doing the headlands climb, early in the morning.  it’s right off the bridge, and 800+ feet of climbing.  I might make a jump to the rodeo beach route, who knows.

lazy sunday.

9-19_san-francisco

wasn’t feeling up to riding this morning, my legs felt trashed after all the climbing on friday and saturday.  instead, I spent the morning cleaning the road bike.  there was sand and grit on every surface, it definitely needed a clean wipe down.  anyway, I ended up taking out the bmx bike once the weather looked like it was half decent.  but as soon as I stepped outside, the mist came.  I still managed to jam down to the embarcadero via broadway, then over to pier 39, all the way down to this one off chute you see in the picture above.  mistified the whole time.

not sure if it would’ve been enjoyable doing any ride on the road bike today, I definitely would’ve hated to be all the way in fairfax (or farther) facing wet roads.  either way, a day off the road bike feels good for a change.  in other news, I ordered my shimano 105 5700 36 hole hubs, in black, on thursday.  hoping they’ll be in this week so I can get that training wheelset built, as well as drop off the bike to get the 300 mile checkup and swap the look pedal spindles for the new ones.

I want the weather to go back to partly cloudy.

“battle stations!”

spotted this indy fab build on sffixed.  from the thomson/thomson and reynolds carbon clinchers, to the sram and speedplays, this bike is thoroughly thought out and proper.  the black and white color combo is clean!

the camouflage tape on the classic bend drops is something I’ve never seen before.  I like it.

9-18_muir-woods

voted heaviest mist ever, 1 out of 1 riders agree.  the weather’s been really interesting, to say the least.  at night, the fog rolls in, but it stays humid.  a thick mist forms and just makes the roads wet enough to be sketchy.  and the mist stays until the afternoon sun burns it off.  this morning it was particularly thick and warm (haha!).  I was soaked through all my clothes by time I got to the top of 4 corners, but because of the humidity, my temperature was stable.  it was actually comfortable enough to ride through.  I just did 1 loop though, I couldn’t bear to have wet feet any longer.  and the descents were sketch-mcgee.  it might as well have been raining out, the mist was so thick.

for the most part, there was no one out.  actually, I take that back.  I got stuck behind this group of 10 riders that were riding 2 and 3 across the entire width of the bike path on the bridge as I was heading out to marin.  luckily, it wasn’t the entire span of the bridge, just from the second pillar to the parking lot.  but really though?  creeping at 10mph across the bridge was just mind-blowing.  they were barely pedaling.  but after that point, the roads were empty.  I think cyclists were heading out later because of the wet roads.  or maybe they were sleeping in, oblivious of the road conditions.

here, have some cliche red balloons coming over a small, grassy hill in crissy fields.  the clouds only look scary.  they’re really not.

tacolicious!

9-17_tacolicious

tonight, I headed out with my boy zack to get some bomb tacos from tacolicious.  we got there at about 8:30 but didn’t get seated for about 30 minutes, they were PACKED.  must’ve showed up later last time, but either way, it was worth the wait.  we ordered a total of 10 tacos: 4 cod fish tacos, 3 tacos with rib meat, and 3 carnitas.  they were all delicious (or…tacolicious…?), but zack and I agreed, the fish and carnitas were the best.  apparently there are still a couple tacos we’ve yet to try, but we’ll leave those for another time.

fueled up for tomorrow’s ride, I’m thinking I’ll play it safe with double muir woods again.  my favorite.

look, spindles!

9-17_look-pedal-spindles

yep, those are my pedal spindles.  the bearings are actually part of the spindle, and can’t be replaced.  how they got so surface rusted, I don’t know.  travis took the picture last week when the bike was being built.  I forgot if I mentioned that look suggested to cut the rubber seal on the side of the spindle so that the pedals spun more freely.  I was planning on bringing the bike in when the wheelset was built, to get my 300 mile checkup, but travis called and had some good news: look was sending me a new pair of spindles for my keo 2 max pedals!  no charge.  they should be at the shop mid next week.  hoping to make 1 stop at the shop to drop off the 105 hubs to get the wheels built, the checkup on the supersix, as well as the pedal spindles swap.

stoked!

the mist.

9-17_double-muir-woods

thick fog, heavy mist, and a touch of humidity to tie everything together on a double muir woods.  the good thing about having this kind of weather?  less people out, of course!  I had the road to myself, for the most part, and never once caught a car on the descents.  however, since it was a bit wet out, the roads were slick, so I had to mind my apexes and tire angle.  didn’t have to much of a problem at all, just have to remember to brake and stay upright.  plus, descending in the wet is just sketchy.  it’s not worth pushing it.  on the bridge, the fog was thick, but thankfully, there weren’t many tourists out.  the few that were out enduring the misty rain stuck to the rail to let cyclists pass.  thanks, it means a lot especially when I can’t see more than 100ft in front of me.

side note, I’ve been taking the ride photo at the end of the loop, near the golden gate bridge.  it’s a bit harder to get the phone out of my jersey pocket and switch it to camera mode all while riding on the backside of muir woods.  plus, it breaks my cadence at a point in the ride which I should be keeping it steady for the climb out to mill valley.  I’m sure you understand.  that being said, ride photos are important to me, thus the later one at the bridge.

the more you know.  *chime*
