finish like a boss.

11-22_rodeo-beach1

yep, my rear tire flatted on my ride this morning.  not to worry though, the embrocation kept my legs warm, and I swapped out the tube in a couple minutes.  the culprit?  well, there were two rocks jammed deep into the rubber, enough to break the kevlar layer on the gatorskin.  they were triangular in shape (go figure), and flatted the tire within a second.  I was a bit bummed, initially, but definitely glad it didn’t happen on a descent, or mid-turn.

after changing out the tube, I climbed the route again.  when sh*t goes down, finish like a boss.  it felt good to only be a couple minutes back on my usual time, and I jammed back home to get ready for work.

good times in marin!

the rain.

11-20_rodeo-beach

as soon as I got outside, the rain was coming down.  there seemed to be a break in the clouds across the bridge, so I stayed optimistic.  even though I was wearing my waterproof overshoes, the water slowly seeped onto my socks, which proceeded to lead the water down into my shoes.  it was a slow, uncomfortable feeling to say the least.  I guess it could’ve been much worse if I wasn’t wearing the goretex layer over my sidis, so I can’t complain too much.  the bike path along the embarcadero was thoroughly saturated with water.  my front wheel was kicking tons of water up onto my legs and drivetrain.  the rooster tail was safely contained under a fender, thankfully.

I made my way across the bridge, and towards rodeo beach.  it wasn’t raining as hard on the other side of the headlands, but the ground was still wet, to say the least.  the wind was heavy from the coast (surprise) and practically froze my wet hands.  I think I need to invest in a nice pair of winter gloves to take away the bite of the rain.  the long finger gloves I have are made for cooler weather, but definitely not meant for rain.  either way, I had the paths to myself, for the most part.  there were several people out with their dogs on the descents, so I made sure to call out to them before passing.  it’s a bit nerve racking to pass a running dog on a wet descent, but I made it down safely both times, so no complaints.

I made my way back to the bridge parking lot, and saw two ranger cars blocking the roadway.  I came up to them, and unclipped for a second, to see what was going on.  one of the rangers asked, “are you here for the ride?”.  I thought for a second, then remember the conzelman grand opening ride was today, as stated on the marin headlands project website.  I replied, “oh, no.  I’m actually heading back from my ride right now.”  I mentioned that I had been over at rodeo beach just now, and the weather was clear over there, much more protected than the front side.  I left him, and headed towards the bridge.  I spotted a handful of weekend warriors gathering at the bridge parking lot, getting ready for the grand opener.  doing that climb isn’t bad in the wet, the sketchy part is the descent.  I wouldn’t want to bank those turns in the rain.

lessons learned from today’s ride: winter gloves would be nice, goretex shoe covers work better if the top velcro is tight, and rear fenders might look a bit un-pro, but do an awesome job containing excess water coming off the road.

hope it doesn’t rain too hard tomorrow!

my, my.

11-19_rodeo-beach

out to rodeo beach today, the steady drizzle and wind kept me from heading farther out.  I should’ve worn my waterproof shoe covers, that’s for sure.  my feet were cold and damp near the end of the ride, which wasn’t ideal.  on the bright side, there wasn’t anyone out, and cars were kept at a distance.  rode through some thinned out mud along the marina greens which completely covered my bike and legs in a fine mist of grim.  not the best feeling in the world, especially in the cold.  I made it back home, safe and sound, threw my clothes in the wash, and gave the bike a cleaning.

I took the bmx to the shop to pick up my helmet and some cycling food.  joseph was chilling at the shop, along with marc, a stellar track bike (street) rider.  travis brought out the lazer box and set it in front of me.  a bit of gloss white sheen peaked through, my eyes lit up.  yes, this is what I’ve been waiting for: a race-legal helmet that fit my head like a suction cup.  I also got a chance to check out mike giant’s raleigh macaframa collaboration rush hour pro.  he also did the paint scheme for the bike, which made it even better to see in person.  mike giant’s mike giant X macaframa bike.  we talked shop for a bit, and I got a bit of input about tire wear, cable tension, and cyclocomputers.  I’ll probably be buying a cateye wireless computer soon, in preparation for next racing season.  something basic…I’m mostly concerned with distance traveled – probably one of the more important pieces of data during a race.

I left the shop, and headed to work.  it started raining a bit, which was a bit of a pain, it was hard enough riding with weight on my back, and on a bike that weighed just as much.  putting in time didn’t seem like much of a choir, considering I had already taken care of the helmet situation.  I was also waiting on my online order to arrive.  here’s the haul:

11-19_daily

from freewheel: lazer helium, heed, 2 hammergels, and a continental gatorskin.  from competitive cyclist: hincapie short finger gloves (they were on sale, I couldn’t pass them up!), skins sport compression tights, 2 assos chamois creams, rapha embrocation, and…yes, the hincapie eVent shell.  what makes the eVent fabric different than goretex?  the fabric membrane allows sweat to evaporate through, while keeping rain out.  seems impossible, right?  goretex, on the other hand, is a laminated sheet, bonded to an outer shell.  from my own experience, goretex does one thing really well: keeps what’s outside, outside, and what’s inside, inside.  it doesn’t breathe well, so condensation builds up on the inside of the jacket.  on the plus side, it keeps the water out.  but what’s the benefit of that, when you’re soaking on the inside from all that sweat.  yea, lame.

rei has done an excellent job compiling all the information about rain fabrics onto a single page, check it out!  I have yet to wear the shell on the road bike, so I can’t say how it is quite yet.  but soon!

11-18_rodeo-beach

…gently down the beach.  merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, rides are but a dream.

out for that early morning rodeo beach steez.  I wanted to get in some miles today, and a tad bit of elevation, as opposed to yesterday’s ride, which was all climbing.  mixing it up couldn’t possibly hurt, and my endurance could use some work.  I’ve been focusing mainly on my pedal stroke and power symmetry between legs.  my right heel tilts slightly inward, so before the custom insoles and cleat angle shim, my right leg wasn’t able to get as much power down as my left leg.  now that things are sorted, and my right leg is more aligned, I have to get it up to speed with my other side.  it’s as much psychological as it is physical – my left side is significantly stronger (and bigger), which leads to a bit of output imbalance when pedaling.  now I have to focus in, and pedal my right leg hard, knowing it’s in full alignment with all the various foot support.

back to the ride though.  now that conzelman is open, the amount of riders I see out at rodeo beach is a lot less.  I think I saw about 3 riders total, after heading through the bunker tunnel to the backside.  it was quite nice having the road to myself.  though I have to say, my hands got a bit cold on the ride, I might have to resort to full finger gloves next time.

it’s suppose to rain saturday (80%), sunday (60%), and monday (40%).  maybe even tomorrow.  I’ll see how hard it’s raining, but I definitely want to make it out to rodeo beach if the drizzle is light.

have a good thursday!

the pre-dawn.

11-17_headlands

this view is always worth the early morning alarm.  up to the top of the headlands via conzelman, so glad it’s open again.  there were several cyclists making their way to the top as I was doing my mccollough summit climbs, but one guy in particular hopped on my wheel and stayed there for a bit as we passed by all his other riding buddies.  what bothers me most about that, hm, let’s see.  you didn’t have it in you initially to ride faster, so what changed when I passed you?  I really don’t see the point.  only pushing yourself when someone, who you’re clearly not riding with, passes you, seems a bit lame.  he beat me to the top, and chilled with his homies, while I headed back down to do two more climbs.  and by time I was making my final round up to the top, I saw him finally heading back down, assuming back home, because I didn’t see him making another round up the hill when I made my final descent.

then who did I see getting on the bridge as I was heading home…travis from freewheel hayes!  he was rolling solo, and had a big grin on his face.  hope you had a good ride.

today’s lesson: do your own work, and push yourself even when there’s no one around.  that’s what makes a true cyclist.

this guy has a castle for a house.  he also has a pair of binoculars on a tripod, near the edge of the window.  lurking hard.

went up to the roof for a shot.  you can spot the moon near the flag on the left, on top of one of the office buildings.  it’s that clear out.

ending the day with a bit of cycling laundry.  we’ll see how my legs are feeling tomorrow morning, but I have a feeling I’ll push out a bit of pre-dawn pain before I head into work.  it’s hard to stay off the bike when the weather is being so generous.

it was perfect out today: 70*, no clouds, no tourists, and empty roads.  except for this strong crosswind coming from the eastbay (or at least it felt like it).  I headed to conzelman to attempt some hill repeats from mccollough up to the top.  I managed to climb the section 3 times, which brings to total elevation to somewhere around 1400ft (including the initial ~800ft climb to the top from horseshoe bay).  glad I didn’t head any farther out though, the wind just kept getting strong through the ride.

have a good monday!

roads like glass.

11-14_recovery

I left early this morning in an attempt to beat the sunday rush.  the weather was warming up nicely, but there was still a heavy crosswind coming off the coast.  I had my eyes set on the tiburon peninsula, paradise drive.  construction workers had been working on the road since last month, and now it was finally finished, repaved to perfection.  I made my way up to camino alto keeping the pace steady, making sure not to push too hard to risk not recovering at all from yesterday.  there were several casual cyclists out, and few cars, which made the ride pleasantly quiet.

as I approached the familiar crest at the beginning of the loop, the pavement abruptly changed to the dark sheen of fresh tarmac.  it was so lush that it blinded me, literally.  light from the sun bounced off the pavement and straight into the faces of drivers and cyclists.  besides that though, the short section of road was dreamy.  they hadn’t even placed the painted lines on the road yet, just thin marking lines and reflectors divided shoulder from road, from opposite traffic.  the new section is really just a third of the whole length of the road, so after a couple miles, it switch back to the crappy road which everyone resented.

I started heading back towards sausalito, and spotted a massive group of at least 30 riders.  white with blue dots…oh, team metromint.  it must’ve been their recruiting ride, because I saw tons of familiar faces, including travis from freewheel hayes, joshua from mission cycling, etc.  I was excited to see them pass by, some of them seemed to recognize me.  I probably should’ve kept tabs on that ride so I could’ve headed out with them, but it completely slipped from my mind.  plus, I guess I haven’t really raced, they’re only looking for cat4 and above for their team.

the shot above was taken from e road, another freshly paved road that leads to horseshoe bay, and eventually to the path under the bridge.  you can kind of see the sheen of the road, it’s a pretty good representation of what paradise drive is like.

glad to see the metromint team rolling deep, hope you guys had a good ride!
