is it spring yet? it sure felt like a spring morning out there in marin, today. a bit breezy but clear skies the entire time, with an awesome sunrise. I went out to rodeo beach today (as photographed), but wanted to add in some more climbing at the end, so I tacked on mccollough and conzelman. the sun was barely coming through the horizon as I made it onto the bridge. then a few seconds later I saw three guys in freewheel kits – connor, travis (I think), and daniel. hope you guys had a good ride.

the view from the top of conzelman this morning. a gloriously brisk morning ride with lots of hill efforts and minimal wind. dare I say, one of the more perfect mornings I’ve had on the bike? no flats, no surprise potholes in pitch black, friendly (and competitive) faces up and down the hill, and an awesome sunrise to tie it all together. the weather was still a bit cold this morning, so I layered up, and stayed relatively comfortable through the whole ride. I might need to invest in some lightly insulated full-finger gloves in the future though, my fingertips were frosty on the descents. something in between wind gloves and fully sealed, gore-tex lined winter gloves…
the middle and lower parts of mccollough were still kind of wet from the fog mist last night. neutral pedal stance was something I’m trying to eliminate from my descending technique, and probably one of the reasons why I fell on the backside descent of mt. tam a few months back. pressure on the outside leg makes the tires dig into the turn, tracking more predictably, yielding a safer (and faster) turn – that bit of information was stated at the early bird crit on sunday. it’s something that made sense to me from the beginning, but hearing it from a mentor made that much more of a difference to me.
as a side note, I’ve got a new set of voler arm, knee, and leg warmers on the way. I currently have only one set of warmers and the day to day riding that I use them for will probably wear them out pretty fast. hell, the capo arm warmers I have don’t even grip my arms anymore…lame. plus, the warmers were on sale. it was hard to pass up!

the parking lot wasn’t as filled as it was last week. maybe it was the heavy fog that discouraged people, but either way, when I arrived at the parking lot, it was completely empty. I think there was only about 40 cat5 riders, and even less in the other categories. this week’s clinic talked about pack riding and cornering in a group. it was actually pretty helpful learning how to corner correctly in a group, and it helped a lot when we finally started to race the course. there were two major things that I learned today: riding in the drops (in a crit) helps a lot and pedaling through the turn will help you maintain your momentum. riding in the drops for an extended period of time isn’t something I’m used to, but out on the course, it made the most sense. the lower center of gravity meant I could carry more speed through the turn more safely, rub elbows and shoulders without getting tangled in handlebars, and catch a sweet draft behind other riders.
I spent most of the race in the middle of the pack, getting advice from various mentors about pockets, drafting, and pedaling through the turns. some moments were a bit hairy though, at one point a guy ended up on the ground due to swerving and losing control of the bike. I’m still not completely sure what happened, but when it happened, I was about 50ft back. I looked behind me for a quick second to see if there was anyone behind me, and I hit the brakes. my rear tire locked for a second, and I turned right to avoid the wreck. it was sketchy for sure, but luckily, no one was seriously injured. the remaining laps were taken pretty cautiously, I think everyone had their wits about them today. the riding was much more organized and smooth.
next week is the early bird road race in patterson. then the next day is the 3rd early bird clinic and criterum. it’s going to be another busy week, which means as many pre-dawn rides as I can bear before the race weekend. agh! and to completely change the subject and mood, have some dailies.

finally, a full day off without rain or sore legs! the weather was immaculate outside, high 40′s to high 50′s all day long with sunshine the entire ride. it was picture perfect for marin and san francisco this time of year, I was stoked to finally stretch my legs with a substantial ride. the past couple weeks I’ve only ridden two hour sessions because of work and my schedule…it’s been a bit bland. today’s ride was one of the most grueling routes I’ve ever done. I rode up to 4 corners, the ranger station, down into stinson, up highway 1 to bofax, bofax to ridgecrest/7 sisters, back to the ranger station, back down to stinson, down highway 1 towards muir woods, muir woods to mill valley, through sausalito, and then the icing on the cake, sea-level to the top of conzelman. probably around 65 miles with roughly 7000ft of climbing. it was straight brutal on the legs.
on the way up to the ranger station the first time (from 4 corners) I had a misson cycling member on my wheel for a minute or so. at one point I heard him feather his brakes, which had me a bit worried for a second…we’re going uphill! luckily, nothing really happened, and I split off to get some water. we exchanged a couple of words, I think his were something like, “I hate you young, skinny guys! there goes my motivation!” at least he was cool about it, haha! I stopped by the fountain to top off my bottle before descending down into stinson beach. the weather was warming up nicely, but the ground was still saturated at some turns, which was a bit of a bummer. but considering how nice the rest of the ride was, I couldn’t really complain too much. plus, it’s technically still “winter” here in the city. anyway, I paced a guy in a new car (a ford mustang, I think) down the hill to stinson. it was hilarious because he was trying so hard to get away from me by late braking, apexing across the double yellow (DANGEROUS), and accelerating on any straight he had. all the while, I was just chilling, minding my turns and braking. hell, I wasn’t even close to his car, I was at least 100ft back. maybe he just wanted to drive fast.
oh, fun fact of the day: stinson beach is a city right on the coast, with a population of 486. I read the sign just as I passed it, thought it was a pretty neat piece of information. highway 1 was quiet and lonely all the way up to bolinas. there were some cars occasionally, but I didn’t see any riders heading the opposite way. as soon as I got to bofax, I spotted the mission cycling guy way in the distance on highway 1 GETTIN’ IT, full gas. perfect motivation for me on the bofax climb. I was instantly reminded how much longer this climb was than anything I’ve been doing recently. halfway in, the pain started to set in. the amazing views helped to keep my mind busy, which was nice. I actually learned a lot more about my riding position on this climb, which helped a lot later on in the ride. the shot above is from the intersection at the top of bofax, towards 7 sisters.
then the rollers started. steady climbing, a short plateau, more climbing, another break, more climbing. at one point, I actually considered going straight home after the descent, that’s how much it was hurting. but I figured that I wouldn’t have another opportunity for a long ride until next week, so I had to make it really count. I stopped at the ranger station on my way down to top off my bottles with the remaining fuel I had left, and dropped back down into stinson again. instead of heading north on highway 1, I went south, back towards muir woods from the backside. the rollers paired with the view of the pacific ocean were just plain ILL. I was so excited about the road conditions that I almost forgot how much climbing I had just done. it was that nice out!
muir woods was pretty windy, but I made it out in one piece, ready for the final trek home. on my way back, I actually spotted a guy riding a t-mobile colored giant tcr in a freewheel kit – hell yes, support your local. that gave me the final motivation to kill it on conzelman, 0-814ft.
hope everyone enjoyed their saturday!

the rain from yesterday left a damp smell in the air throughout the city, and into marin. it also left the ground a bit wetter than usual, so I had to mind my descents and turning angles, which was kind of a bummer. hill repeats as usual, but it was lonelier than the previous times I had been out on conzelman. the weather was warm though (45-50*), I ditched my wool cap and fleece insulated gloves for a cotton cap and some thinner long finger gloves. no outer shell, either! just a wind vest to take away the bite of the incoming air.
that being said, I’ve learned a lot about staying warm over the past couple weeks. as a general rule, I’d rather be warmer than too cold to function. it’s easy to shed clothes, or vent if you’re too warm. but if you’re too cold, and already cycling at your capacity, then…yea, that’s going to suck. and it’s happened to me numerous times in the past, agh!
took a day off the bike this morning. I’ve been feeling a bit more tired lately since the work hours have picked up significantly over the past couple weeks, but I’m fully recharged, and ready to get back on the bike tomorrow morning. pre-dawn status all up on the headlands!
oh, and the picture above is from this afternoon. I’ve seen this truck parked on townsend, about a block from where I work, I figured I’d walk over and get some tacos. of course, about 10 seconds after I took the picture and walked over, the guy inside told me that they were closed…well if you’re closed, why is the side visor open…? I don’t get it. or just post up a sign on the front window that says, “CLOSED!”. oh well, at least I got a short walk in before working through the afternoon. seemed like a well-timed day off too, considering it rained a bit in the morning.

short spin session before going home to meet a potential roommate. long story short, he ended up taking the room and will be moving in on the 17th. oh, and he works for MTV managing some advertising accounts they have. pretty sick! wonder if he can get me tickets to the vma’s….
oh yea, and I’ll be listing my old shimano da7600 cranks on sffixed as well as craigslist. 165mm length, iso taper. wouldn’t mind having some extra cash!

sick sunrise. the weather is getting warmer, and my face retains feeling throughout my rides now, how pleasant. the temperatures are around 45-50*, nearly a 10* jump from the previous weeks. the sun also seems to be rising a bit earlier, I can’t wait until we can roll the clocks back for daylight savings. today, I decided to hit the same ride and work on my climbing some more. same ~2700ft of climbing, same hill repeats up mccollough to conzelman. there was a guy playing a drum set at the very top of the climb, so that was pretty cool. he should come out more often, it was nice seeing something different for a change.
oh, and some dailies from yesterday that I forgot to upload. and I’m prefacing the first picture by saying that my company uses yammer, so I had this “AH HA!” moment when I saw the billboard.
and then of course, I have to throw in that dark picture at ghiridelli square. I haven’t tried any of my routes yet, since I’m still trying to get my track legs back. switching back and forth from the track and road bikes is taking some getting used to. hope to pedaling smoothly by next week!

ah yes, there’s that familiar view from the top of conzelman. hill intervals today, with an emphasis on out of the saddle climbing. I had a bit of muscle soreness from riding the track bike sunday and monday, a familiar feeling that I hadn’t felt in almost a year. it’s mostly on the inside of my quads, and the stabilizer muscles around my knees. it didn’t drastically affect my climbing or riding ability, though I do have to say after the second climbing effort, my legs were burning. my spin is getting better, so that’s definitely a plus. and if anything, I’m working different portions of my legs by varying my riding.
oh, and before I forget, my thermal overshoes came in yesterday. they’re insulated and have a layer of gore-tex, like my previous shoe covers.
they’re significantly warmer than my other shoe covers, definitely going to use them through the winter!
