kalavinka.

I guess when people are at the track, riders drape their helmets on the back of their saddles.  love the shot of this setup though, even with the road bike front wheel.

daniel oss and elia viviani (liquigas-cannondale) took a 1-2 sprint victory in denver for the team on last stage of the usa pro cycling challenge.  viviani took 2 stage victories in the previous days of the race as well, this was the team’s third stage win.  earlier in the stage, rafael infantino (epm-une) took the final kom atop lookout mountain, chased by a group containing the general classification favorites.  the fractured peloton regrouped on the run into the denver circuit.  a 4-man break containing oscar sevilla (saxobank), lachlan Norris (htc-highroad), javier megias (team type 1-sanofi), and matt cooke (team exergy) – they lead the peloton by 1:30.  with 11km still to race, the break was caught.  hayden roulston (htc-highroad) then attacked off the front, joined by ryan roth (spidertech p/b c10) and oscar alverez (gobernacion de antioquia).  andy schleck (leopard-trek) attempted to bridge, but was reeled back into the peloton.  the trio was caught with 2km left to the line.

levi leipheimer secured his overall victory at the race, making for 3 huge overall wins for his season – usa pro cycling challenge, the tour de suisse, and the tour of utah.  christian vande velde (garmin-cervélo) finished 2nd place overall, 11 seconds back.  tejay van garderen (htc-highroad) took 3rd place, 17 seconds back from leipheimer.

tony martin (htc-highroad) posted the fasted time in the 47km individual time trial around salamanca, rounding the course in 55:54.  chris froome (sky) rode an amazing time trial and finished 2nd place, 59 seconds down from martin – he gapped overnight race leader bauke mollema (rabobank), and currently sits in 1st place overall, the new vuelta a españa leader.  bradley wiggins (sky) started his time trial strong, but dug a little too deep early on – he still managed to finish in 3rd place, 1:22 behind martin.  wiggins is currently 3rd overall, 20 seconds down from his teammate, froome.  vincenzo nibali (liquigas-cannondale) finished 2:24 down in today’s time trial, slipping to 4th place overall, 31 seconds down – with a bunch of mountain stages still to come, nibali is hanging tough, waiting out his rivals until the climbs.  fabian cancellara (leopard-trek) finished in 4th place today, 1:27 after martin’s time – with the world championships looming next month, tony martin is the new time trial specialist on the block.  combined with today’s win, he’s won 5 individual time trials this year.  jakob fuglsang (leopard-trek) has been riding consistently well through the stages thus far, finishing today 1:37 down – he currently sits in 2nd place overall, 12 seconds shy of froome.

the pro moment.

the spotless drivetrain.  the staple to every pro bike is the immaculately clean drivetrain.  everything from the cranks, chainrings, chain, derailleurs, and cassette is flawlessly clean, maintained daily by the mechanics of the team.  the components look better than brand new.  there isn’t an excess of chain lube, no grimy spots or packed dirt in the cassette, and not even a speck of grease on the chain links.  seeing a shot of a pro drivetrain is like witnessing the birth of a new galaxy in the universe.  the cleanliness is all-knowing, and infinitely flawless.  the awe and wonder of the spotless drivetrain is also tied to the rider.  pro cyclists deliver constant wattage that amateur cyclists barely ever see, and it’s only fitting that the mechanical components that ‘make them go’ follow suit.  the perfectly lubed drivetrain before every event.  a point-to-point component inspection before every event.  chain stretch, cassette wear, chainring wear, cable stretch…everything checked meticulously, and cleaned prior to races.  the dream drivetrain for worthy, pro cyclists.

perfect examples of spotless drivetrains.  my setups will never even come close, not even on their best days.  from top to bottom: philippe gilbert (omega-pharma lotto) rocking the berner rear derailleur cage on his campagnolo super record 11 at the tour de france, tom danielson (garmin-cervélo) with the sram red derailleur with shimano 7900 cassette/chain, and lars boom (rabobank) with a shimano 7970 di2 setup.

monday’s ride.

another quiet morning on the bridge.  no mist or damp surfaces to speak off, everything was dry out there today.  without anyone talking loudly, shouting, or chanting, I wasn’t able to get a quote for this post, either.  there weren’t any token random drafter guys feeding off my rear wheel.  and I didn’t see anyone I knew, though a guy wearing an above category kit gave me a friendly wave – I strive to be friendly cycling force in marin.  other than that, there were a lot of commuters out traveling to and from the city, probably taking advantage of the ‘good’ weather.

I guess there’s not too much left to say, other than the ride was good and that I’m now hungry for food.

the chromed bits against the black frame and white tires looks really good.  I like that fender mounted rear light, as well.  also notice the very steep high heels for maximum power transfer.  cruising in the netherlands never looked so easy.

daniel martin (garmin-cervélo) took the summit finish at the top of la covatilla, finishing ahead of bauke mollema (rabobank) and juan jose cobo (geox-tmc).  after the puerto de la cruz di hierro opening climb, a break formed containing sebastian lang (omega-pharma lotto), jose vicente toribio alcolea (andalucia caja granada), pim ligthart and martijn keizer (vacansoleil-dcm).  25km after their formation, lang and ligthart accelerated away from the other two riders.  katusha was back in the main peloton, chasing hard for rodriguez and moreno.  the 2-man break had a falling gap of 4 minutes with 20km of climbing still to the line.  the men were caught by the charging peloton.   vincenzo nibali (liquigas-cannondale) and daniel martin broke off the front, with kevin seeldrayers (quick step) and sergio pardilla (movistar) chasing 12 seconds back.

the fractured peloton swept the 2 chasers back up, with nibali and martin still leading by 13 seconds with 3km still left to climb.  christopher froome (sky) and team leader bradley wiggins stayed chasing near the front of the fractured peloton – the pace dropped race leader joaquin rodriguez off the back of the bunch.  froome dragged jurgen van den broeck (omega-pharma lotto), cobo, and mollema with him and wiggins, eventually catching the 2-man break.  as the line crept over the summit, martin attacked off the front of the group, gapping his stage rivals, sealing the deal for a well-deserved win.  rodriguez finished 49 seconds back, and surrendered his leader’s jersey to bauke mollema by 1 second.  nibali took a large chunk out of time out of the gc lead, and currently sits 3rd with only 9 seconds separating him from 1st place.

elia viviani (liquigas-cannondale) took a second bunch sprint victory at the stage 5 finish in brekenridge.  his teammate, daniel oss, gave another stellar lead out for viviani, and ended up finishing 3rd behind jamie castaneda (upm-une).  earlier in the day, janier acevedo (gobernacion de antioquia) attacked on the climb up to rabbit ears pass (9400ft elevation) and was joined by andy schleck (leopard-trek), ivan basso (liquigas-cannondale), laurens ten dam (rabobank), and tom peterson (garmin-cervélo).  acevedo suffered a mechanical, dropping back, and leaving the 4-man break.  radioshack, unitedhealthcare, and bmc kept the peloton chase going, and caught the break 500m to the line.

the general classification remains the same with levi leipheimer (radioshack) leading christian vande velde (garmin-cervélo), and tejay van garderen (htc-highroad).

ugh, craigslist.

I only have 2 things for sale on craigslist at the moment: look keo 2 max carbon pedals (steel spindles), and the cycleops joule 2.0 computer head unit.  both are reasonably priced and I took into consideration how much I paid initially, and how much I need them out of my life (the sale isn’t life or death, so the price isn’t $1).  that being said, potential buyers still call the first shots in terms of e-mails and pricing.  if someone is interested, all they have to do is click the anonymous e-mail link at the top of my post, and type a short little blurb to me.  and as I’ve stated previously, if a buyer has a price in mind that they want to buy the item for, put it up for me to see.

in this case, mike came up with the magical ’1/3′ ratio from new to used pedals.  I’ve actually never read that anywhere, but I guess that amount of depreciation might make sense for some cycling components depending on year, amount used, current condition, and rarity.  in reality, I was just a bit disappointed to not see an actual offer, but a jumbled backdoor justification for a reduction of price for a pair of pedals.  he already came up with the magic ratio, why not just post the price he’s willing to buy it for?  now I’m suppose to rack my brain upon his e-mail, and let it irritate me for several minutes as I type a long sigh e-mail about how I need the money for whatever reason, and that the price negotiable about $5 max?  but for a buyer to post the price, it’s the equivalent of a card player showing their hand.  and with craigslist transaction, especially for bike components, this is apparently a huge no-no (I’m being sarcastic, but it’s hard via typed words on the internet).

anyway, I still don’t know about this magic ratio business.  I sold my previous generation look keo pedals for $70, and I’m pretty sure that was above the magic ratio for used goods.

and I still haven’t replied to mike.
