andy fenn’s dolan ares.

andy fenn (an post-sean kelly) rides on this dolan ares.  his top tube sports the british flag on it since he was the 2010 u23 road race champion.

the bike has hope rs-sp 50mm carbon tubulars.  the wheels utilize straight pull, bladed sapim cx-ray spokes and machined aluminum hubs.

140mm 3t arx-pro stem to 3t rotundo pro bars – a full aluminum cockpit.  the carbon tapered fork has a 1.5″ lower bearing.

sram red with a force cassette, obviously.

richard sachs cx.

with the cyclocross season now in full swing, expect there to be more pro cx bike checks, and less road related ones.  hell, I don’t even ride/race cx, but they’re sure fun to look at.  I may get into some cyclocross after I get a job though, who knows.  this is dan chabanov‘s richard sachs steel cyclocross rig, as featured on cyclocross magazine.

“Believe the hype. It’s an incredibly refined product, he’s been making bikes for 40 years. Enough people have gushed about his bikes that I don’t really have to, but from the first time you get on one, it just feels right. There’s nothing wrong. It’s responsive without being twitchy, it’s stable without being slow. It strikes the right balance.”

chas rocking his road bike’s shamal wheel up front on the histogram.

he’s co-founder of tcb courier here in san francisco.  with 18 riders and still growing, the company is the largest messengering service here in the city!  they also just celebrated their 2 year anniversary, so congrats to chas and the rest of the riders at tcb.

wednesday’s ride.

it was perfectly clear and sunny this morning.  much warmer than usual, too.  I had much better luck with my newly swapped tires – no flats!  I think after yesterday, I’ll learn to be more thankful for fresh rubber and proper psi in the tires.  it felt so good to not have to worry about a slowly leaking rear tire, and having the confidence to push it through descents.  as predicted after yesterday’s cleaning session, the bike rode swimmingly.

I think the bike construction workers are also learning to cope with the steady stream of cyclists at all times.  there’s usually a crossing guard type person waiting while I’m heading back towards the city, and usually he asks people to walk their bike through the ‘painting zone’.  not sure what they were doing today, though.  I didn’t see any new paint going onto any parts of the bridge, but either way, he told me to just ‘go slow’ when I approached the workers.  excellent, progress and acceptance that getting off the bike completely is probably more of a hazard than riding very slowly through the section.  I’m speaking purely from my own experience on the bike – maybe for rent-a-bike tourists, getting off their disc brake equipped, 40lbs city cruiser is much easier than going a snail’s pace through the work zone.  either way, it’s much easier getting through the section now, and he didn’t even stop me fully.  he just said it on the side of the walkway, as I was passing through.

learning to accept the small wins during riding is winning.  oh, and prior to leaving this morning, I emptied out my chamois butt’r on my…chamois.  I actually didn’t expect there to be so much cream left, but I squeezed it all out on my bibs and lathered it on like peanut butter on a sourdough roll (sounds inappropriately appropriate though, see photo):

I hope everyone has that image stuck in their heads for the rest of the day.  cream bibs on your bottom.  and yes, it felt amazingly awesome.  like riding on a couch, even after 60km of spinning.

cleaning redemption.

moved the front tire/tube to the back, put a new tire/tube up front, cleaned off the wheels, and flossed my cassette.  I hope tomorrow’s ride goes more swimmingly.

le coq sportif.

in short, the french cycling clothing brand, le coq sportif, will be the jersey sponsor for the 2012 tour de france.  “‘men getting ready to ride’ photography that mysteriously glamorises putting a wheel into a frame.” (the inrng).

tipped from inrng, see more on le coq sportif!

in short, do what you love because you love doing it.  the other reasons are irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.  atmo!

such good worldly advice from richard sachs.  and make sure to check his flickr if you want to drool over the unobtainum that is richard sachs cyclocross frames being ridden.

tuesday’s ride.

some days, everything on the bike goes smoothly.  other days, a tire flats but you change it out and gently ride the bike home.  other, other days, the same tire flats twice, but you’re still able to change it out and ride it home.  on the most unlucky other, other, other days, the same tire flats twice, and then continues to slowly deflate as you’re riding back home, 10 miles out.  it was one of those days…

as I came around tiburon, I felt the sloppy feeling of an under inflated rear tire.  I must’ve ran something over in my travels, but figured I could make it home.  after all, it wasn’t leaking too bad, and felt as if it had around 50-60psi left in the tube.  so I rode it out.  as I rode over the rougher sections of the paved bike path, the tire instantly flatted, and I made my way to on of the benches on the side to inspect.  hmm, the pump didn’t seem to be inflating it, I figured the gash had to have been pretty big.  I took it out and tried to find the hole, and when I did, it was apparent that the tire itself lacked the necessary rubber to resist road debris.  I hadn’t changed it out for…I don’t even know how long, months and months probably.  I could already see the threads of the undercasing showing through the remaining rubber.  yikes.

so I changed out the tube with a spare one, pumped it up to a reasonable pressure, and was on my way.  but a couple minutes later, it was going flat again.  and as soon as I was beginning to gauge where I could pull over to check it out, it went completely flat.  I was riding on rim again.  this time, I took out my pump, but it was somehow missing the rubber valve sealer as well as the top cap to hold it in place.  I poured out my tool bag, and luckily, found them wedged between the old tube.  more air in the tire, now.  it seemed to be holding it, and the leak was a bit slower than the first tube.  just a couple more miles until san francisco…back on the bike, now ready to slowly creep out of sausalito, hoping I don’t hit any jarring asphalt or sharp rocks.  as I crested the main bump out of the city, it completely flatted again.  more time with the mini air pump on the side of the road.  okay, now let’s get home!

nope, not yet.  as I made my way down into the bike side bridge parking lot, it was flat again.  now, I was getting frustrated.  I hadn’t even made it a reasonable distance away from the previous time I had to refill it, and it was already dead?  come on tube, be more resilient, stop going flat, and let me make it home.  I pumped it up with more air, but didn’t spend too much time getting the pressure up, assuming I’d have to refill it on the ‘long’ 6km to get home.  but I caught a break.  though there were a few rough spots along crissy and the marina, as well as asphalt chunks missing out of a few places, the tube held off, and I was able to ride it all the way home from that one stop just before the bridge.  the last time I had a flat was april 20th, I checked my tags and saw that it was a front flat out in rodeo beach…so I made it 5 months without a flat.  I guess I was overdue.

3 separate refills and 2 tubes, all for 1 paradise loop.  geez.
