some days, everything on the bike goes smoothly. other days, a tire flats but you change it out and gently ride the bike home. other, other days, the same tire flats twice, but you’re still able to change it out and ride it home. on the most unlucky other, other, other days, the same tire flats twice, and then continues to slowly deflate as you’re riding back home, 10 miles out. it was one of those days…
as I came around tiburon, I felt the sloppy feeling of an under inflated rear tire. I must’ve ran something over in my travels, but figured I could make it home. after all, it wasn’t leaking too bad, and felt as if it had around 50-60psi left in the tube. so I rode it out. as I rode over the rougher sections of the paved bike path, the tire instantly flatted, and I made my way to on of the benches on the side to inspect. hmm, the pump didn’t seem to be inflating it, I figured the gash had to have been pretty big. I took it out and tried to find the hole, and when I did, it was apparent that the tire itself lacked the necessary rubber to resist road debris. I hadn’t changed it out for…I don’t even know how long, months and months probably. I could already see the threads of the undercasing showing through the remaining rubber. yikes.
so I changed out the tube with a spare one, pumped it up to a reasonable pressure, and was on my way. but a couple minutes later, it was going flat again. and as soon as I was beginning to gauge where I could pull over to check it out, it went completely flat. I was riding on rim again. this time, I took out my pump, but it was somehow missing the rubber valve sealer as well as the top cap to hold it in place. I poured out my tool bag, and luckily, found them wedged between the old tube. more air in the tire, now. it seemed to be holding it, and the leak was a bit slower than the first tube. just a couple more miles until san francisco…back on the bike, now ready to slowly creep out of sausalito, hoping I don’t hit any jarring asphalt or sharp rocks. as I crested the main bump out of the city, it completely flatted again. more time with the mini air pump on the side of the road. okay, now let’s get home!
nope, not yet. as I made my way down into the bike side bridge parking lot, it was flat again. now, I was getting frustrated. I hadn’t even made it a reasonable distance away from the previous time I had to refill it, and it was already dead? come on tube, be more resilient, stop going flat, and let me make it home. I pumped it up with more air, but didn’t spend too much time getting the pressure up, assuming I’d have to refill it on the ‘long’ 6km to get home. but I caught a break. though there were a few rough spots along crissy and the marina, as well as asphalt chunks missing out of a few places, the tube held off, and I was able to ride it all the way home from that one stop just before the bridge. the last time I had a flat was april 20th, I checked my tags and saw that it was a front flat out in rodeo beach…so I made it 5 months without a flat. I guess I was overdue.
3 separate refills and 2 tubes, all for 1 paradise loop. geez.
