monday’s ride.

this morning the fog was thick and dry.  it felt like I was riding through one big smog cloud, minus the cars.  fortunately, it cleared up a bit on the bridge, and I was able to safely ride across into marin.  in the back of my mind, I was hoping that the danger zone would be running smoothly on my way back.  aside from the weather being a bit cold, the ride went quite well.  I rode then entire length of camino alto and was only passed by 1 car in the beginning – definitely thankful I didn’t have to stick one on the descent.  after making it around to paradise drive, I caught up to not 2 but 3 packed school buses all with flashing red lights on.  not worth passing one of them for an enormous ticket, especially in marin…

luckily, I passed all of them while they were just about to take off.  after making it around, I jumped back onto the bike path and headed back home.  somewhere along the way, my powertap battery died – I guess I’ll be riding with just heart rate for a while until I get around to dropping off the rear wheel at the shop.  oh well.  the fog was still thick on the bridge and in the city, but it wasn’t low-laying anymore.  visibility was back, and I caught a break in the danger zone (silent shout out to my bridge cop friend, tino), riding through without any hiccups.

so aside from no longer having power or cadence, everything went swimmingly.  now I’m off to work, hope everyone has a good monday!

496 zed.

the 496 is a true track machine  it comes with it’s own integrated cranks, the zed, which takes after their road version, the zed 2′s.  it utilizes their own bb65, 50mm carbon bottom bracket spindle.  the pedal spindle lobes can be swapped out to accommodate lengths from 165-177mm.

nys.

I’ve endured a lot of emotion in my career, and when you think everything that could happen is behind you, you end up in the eye of a storm like yesterday. You’ve got those for you, you’ve got those against you, and then today you get the same rivals and again a sprint. Again, I was the one pulling the longest straw.

grind part 1.

posting this purely for the video content at 2:30 to the end of the video.  this is shot in oslo, norway – we all know that europe coldness is much, much worse than our winters.  so props to them for riding in the pure frost.  the 2:30 content is somewhat iffy because of the slick roads, but it’s well filmed either way.

sunday’s ride.

it’s sunday, once again.  and since I didn’t have to worry about coming back early to head to work, I stayed out a tad bit longer for full paradise loop.  as usual, the roads were quiet.  it felt a bit colder out today, and with everyone still recovering from the 4-day weekend, the shared paths all the way up to the bridge were empty.  there was a fairly strong wind from the north the entire ride, which actually didn’t seem that bad initially.  as I started making my way back around tiburon, the trees and twisty road seemed to block out the chill pretty well.

and then, of course, it turned into a strong cross tailwind heading back into the city.  if only I could manage those speed into headwind, I’d be riding quick!  on a random note, I did notice that there were a lot of banana slugs hanging out on the side of the road today.  I almost ran over one on a descent – definitely glad I didn’t, because it’d probably end up getting all crazy on my rear caliper, or flinging up onto the back of my helmet.  not good.

anyway, I’m hoping to relax for the rest of the day, and maybe do some cycling laundry in preparation for a whole week of pre-dawn rides.  hope everyone had a good weekend.

look familiar?  it’s garrett chow and his specialized langster pro at ocean beach here in san francisco.  he’s sporting a $600 jacket, as well.  a bit on the steep side, for us mortals…

from justin.

justin has been keeping me in the loop via camera photos:

in short, he broke his other collarbone after slipping on a muddy patch of road in the peninsula after being tailgated by a car.  he’s okay for the most part, but will need to be riding on the trainer for a little while before riding out in the open again.  glad you’re okay, justin.  upon the crash, his helmet cracked and needed to be replaced:

enter the replacement: 2012 mavic plasma slr.  very excited to see this helmet in person.  I mean, mavic neutral bikes are resprayed cannondale caad9′s, so you know if they make a helmet, it’s bound to be good.

he picked up his new helmet today, and spotted my s-works langster hanging up.  I feel like he purposely took a teaser photo to really rub it in.  I’m thinking the bike will be done next week some time.  they might still be waiting on parts, who knows.  looks like the wheels are all laced up, though.  and yes, I already bought paint pens for the aluminum braking surface.  stay tuned for pictures of the whole bike (hopefully next week)!

thanks for the pictures, justin.

I see rustie a couple times through the week out in marin and on the golden gate bridge.  he took some footage on thanksgiving day with a go pro mounted on his fixed gear – watch for steve in the chica sexy kit at 1:14!  that’s the same group of guys I saw leaving in the morning as I was heading back into the city.

can’t wait to get back on a track bike again, thanks for the local footage, rustie!
