psychlo x.

not bad, right?

minus the cross-chain (/crank angle), lack of cyclocross tires, front skewer placement, and plastic presta cap(s).  I’ve always been curious to know how campagnolo took mud and grim.

elia viviani (liquigas-cannondale) won the bunch sprint in quines on stage 6 of the tour de san luis, finishing ahead of jj haedo (saxo bank) and andrea guardini (farnese vini).

it’d be suiting that the 201km long stage would be equally as grueling in temperature.  yet still, a break comprised of 9 riders would leap ahead of the peloton and gain 11 minutes over the bunch.  miguel rubiano (androni giocattoli) was in the break and placed 1st on the category 3 climb, el embalse, 40km in, and the category 1, el amago, 57km in – rubiano currently sits in the kom lead with 30 points.  with his points solidified, rubiano sat up to be absorbed by the peloton.  the 8-man break were slowly being reeling back in, and with 50km remaining, they were ahead by only 3:35.  they were eventually caught with 15km remaining.  filippo pozzato (farnese vini) attacked the bunch with 4km remaining but was eventually caught.

20 riders were unable to complete the long stage, including cayetano samiento (liquigas-cannondale) who crashed and suffered serious injury.  no changes to gc – levi leipheimer (omega pharma-quickstep) still leads over alberto contador (saxo bank) by 46, and daniel diaz (san luis somos todos) by 1:31.

sunday’s ride.

after 9 days of not riding (and 6 days of not running), my knee managed to feel a tad better.  but only after numerous stretching sessions.  a lot of stretching, to say the least – thanks for the suggestions, justin.  so I headed out to do half paradise, or however long it took me to sense if the knee was doing better.  as I made it across the bridge, the tingly pain started creeping in – it would probably be a ride out to the edge of the bike path in sausalito, and back.  unfortunately, I didn’t make it too far.  my rear tire hissed and flatted right at the end of the bridge.  I inspected the tire and found a huge gash, probably the width of a thumbnail at least.

I swapped out the tube, and called it any early ride ender.  it wasn’t worth taking the risk heading out farther away from home without at least a spare tube, and with my knee already starting to feel wonky, I figured it’d be the smart thing to do.  quality riding over quantity of riding.  I can’t afford to lose a knee, I don’t think anyone can.

san francisco sunrises are always a treat.

and as I rode back across the bridge, I saw the cause of the flat.  a broken (clear) glass bottle was spread across the entire walkway at one point, it’s a wonder I didn’t get another flat riding back across it.  I hope no one else flatted there, it was pretty treacherous.  glass shards everywhere…

we’ll see how the knee feels tomorrow, I may opt for a shorter ride depending on how the knee feels.  I’m glad to have ridden a bit today, though.  half paradise tomorrow, with no flats, please.

alberto contador (saxo bank) took his second stage victory on stage 5 of the tour de san luis, crossing the line first in merlo.  levi leipheimer was able to hang onto his lead, finishing a brief 5 seconds from contador, and 2 seconds behind daniel diaz (san luis somos todos).

earlier in the day, a break of 4 riders formed between claudio claveles (san luis somos todos), mauro richeze (argentina), eloy ruiz (andalucia) and juan esteban arango (colombia).  emmanuel guevara (san luis sodos todos) and gabriel juarez (argentina) attempted to bridge.  claveles was dropped from the break of 4, but waited for his teammate and juarez who were enroute.  the lead group contained richeze, ruiz, and arango.  they had a lead of 9:40, with the 3 chasers 1:05 back – soon they formed a group of 6 and pulled 13 minutes over the peloton.  guevara took the second intermediate sprint of the day which moved him into the lead for the sprint classification.  their gap continued to fall afterwards, and they were all caught with 13km remaining.

daniel diaz attacked on the final climb and was soon joined by contador and leipheimer.  contador attacked the trio as the summit finish approached to take the stage win ahead of his rivals.  leipheimer continues to hold the lead – contador sits in second place, 46 seconds back, with diaz in 3rd overall, 1:31 back.  nibali is currently 5th overall, 1:50 down.

levi leipheimer (omega pharma-quickstep) won the individual time trial around san luis, rounding the 19.5km course in 23:17.33.  he finished more than a minute ahead of contador, placing himself in 1st place overall.  vicenzo nibali (liquigas-cannondale) finished in 2nd place with a time of 23:50.01 – stefan schumacher (christina watches-ofone) placed 3rd, 38 seconds behind leipheimer.  it’s still early season and leipheimer is showing strong form: “It’s a new team starting off a new year. I’ve been really happy since I’ve come here. I just wanted to show the team, to show [team manager] Patrick [Lefevre], to show the sponsors that I’m very grateful for them allowing me to be part of it.” (cycling news)

leipheimer currently leads schumacher by 53 seconds in the gc, nibali by 55, and contador by 57 seconds.
