I got a call yesterday (that I actually missed because my phone flipped out) at around 3pm from travis at freewheel telling me the bike was done. I left a few hours later, and headed to the shop, excited to pick up the bike. traffic was horrible but luckily I found parking right around the block from the shop when I arrived. travis also had a bit of time to measure my foot tilt angles: 0* on my left, 5* of tilt on my right foot, which I’ve been noticing more and more. we talked at length about cleat angles, leg length discrepancies, float, pedals, and shoes. my right foot was the culprit of my knee pain, I was sure of it. the angle that my foot makes in contact with the cleat to the pedal was too flat, and needed more tilt. he gave me a shim that I ended up installing myself later that night with a new pair of look cleats.
I spent the night tweaking minor things like the saddle angle. to my surprise, dustin got the seatpost length spot on at 15cm, just like my caad9, so that was one less thing I had to worry about. installing the shim was pretty straight forward, it just slipped in between the cleat and adhesive sandpaper layer meant to prevent the cleat from slipping.
this morning I headed out to marin for a double muir to test out the new supersix build.
well, that’s a horrible picture of an awesome ride…anyway, the bike rode so well, I’ve never experienced anything like it before. climbing out of the saddle, the front end of the bike was so stiff, I never felt it give for a second. it’s a full pound lighter than my caad9 build, and it rocketed up the climbs even while sitting down. the beatbox bottom bracket cluster was like pedaling on a piece of concrete, it was SOLID. and though the power transfer and front end stiffness were extraordinary, the ride was still plush and comfortable. parts on the route that would usually feel jarring or rough were smoothed significantly. the compliance kept the tires planted, and the power moving.
I headed to the shop, but got there a bit too early.
there she is, posted up in front. I ended up riding around the area for a bit, and going to the panhandle to stretch in the grass. my legs were feeling it, after being off the bike for a couple days. I came back around about 15 minutes later to find the shop had opened up. travis and dustin explained the chain length to me, and to my surprise, the shortness of the chain was actually beneficial to the drivetrain: crisper shifting, proper tension on the rear derailleur, and no chain suck. the chain I had on the bike previously, the ultegra 6700, was stretched out and dead. it also had one too many links in it, which I was unaware of, so when I picked up this bike, I presumed it’d be the same length as the old one. they did end up tweaking the front derailleur a bit, and lubing the chain more for smoother chainring upshifts.
did I mention my look pedal bearings were surface rusted before the supersix got built up? turns out, this is common for the pedal bearings if you live in a wet climate. but not the bay area. so the mystery of the rusted bearings still remains. travis called up look, and they’re out of stock on replacement spindles until next week. a potential solution suggested by them was to remove the spindle and cut off the rubber seal next to the bearings so they spin more freely. I might bring them in next week to have them trimmed…we’ll see. I almost feel like all of this effort could’ve been diverted if I just bought speedplays in the beginning. oh well, at least now I know.
the shimano 105 5700 hubs are on backorder until next week also, so the training wheelset won’t see light of day for a couple weeks more. not to worry, since the new and improved setup rides quite well. the shim I put on my right shoe actually helped track my knee much straighter. it wasn’t tilting inwards that much, and never once brushed my seat tube water bottle. the shim paired with the cleat angle I dialed in last night did wonders for my stoke, thanks again travis!

woke up this morning feeling refreshed from a good night’s rest and an intense muscle/knee rolling session yesterday. I mentioned before my right knee was giving me problems on muir woods, well today those pains were gone for the most part so I rode to meet justin and travis at velo rouge for a ride. 2 other guys showed up, both of them race cat2 for godspeed (I think, don’t count on it though). we introduced ourselves at the beginning, but as not to butcher their names, or get them wrong, I don’t even want to write them out. we’ll call them pac bikes and godspeed, as those were the kits they were wearing.
anyway, we took the bike path out from sausalito, turned towards mill valley and started heading towards the coast. travis kept a blistering pace with mr. godspeed and I was in no man’s land in the middle. mr. pac bikes and justin were in the back. we got to 4 corners and travis decided to keep climbing towards the ranger station, panoramic highway. I’ve never climbed down the front side of mt. tam before, I’ve always come from 7 sisters down, back towards mill valley. doing it in reverse was nothing short of painful. the trio was way in front of me, I couldn’t even see them anymore. travis and the other guys were waiting at the top for us. they didn’t look phased at all, which was a bit worrying. justin and I refilled our bottles and started the descent towards stinson beach. 2 two guys took off, travis and I got stuck behind some cars, so we lost them on the technical turns. we caught back up to them on highway 1, and decided to head towards point reyes.
travis pushed justin and I to learn how to pace line with the group. it definitely saves a lot of energy, but it’s a skill I have yet to master. the close quarters of the pace line mean you have to have your full attention to the person in front of you, their position, your speed…where everything on the road is. pot holes, the ever present shoulder, cars that pass you at insane speeds, insanely close. I was just trying to keep up with their pace, a very brisk 26-27mph along the coast. the road curved up, and the mr.’s took off. travis went back to tow justin to the front. and I was in no man’s land again. I must’ve rode for at least 10 miles not seeing anyone in front or behind me. travis flew by me and said, “there he is!”. justin and I hopped on travis’ wheel and were hauled back to the other 2 guys.
we made it to point reyes, and took a short break for water and some bananas. it’s where I took the picture. I can’t speak for the others, but at this point, I was feeling pretty beat. I haven’t done a ride longer than 65 miles, round trip, in months. at the pace these guys kept, I was well over my head. I just wanted to hold it together long enough to make it home. we bounced out of pt. reyes and started heading towards nicasio. travis led us through this technical gravel section and took off. I was riding besides mr. godspeed and we chatted for a second about racing and my riding background. I was just trying to steer my bike straight on the rocks. apparently, earlier in the season, this section is a bit wet. pair this with some 25c tires and you’re golden, or so he said.
somehow from this gravel section we wiggled back towards nicasio, where it was grueling flat…and I was just trying to catch the 2 guys. travis was in the back with justin, I had no idea where they were. I spent an amazingly long time trying to catch the mr.’s, and was a bit disappointed in myself, that I couldn’t. the godspeed rider slowed up after a while, and let me tag his wheel while he brought me back to the front. that effort in itself, for me, took even more out of me. I was exhausted to say the least. we made it out of the valley and started the descent, followed by a short turn off, where we stopped for a second to let travis and justin catch back up. we headed towards fairfax from the top, and did another short, steep climb. descended and we were back in downtown fairfax. the 2 others decided to climb the section again, so travis, justin and I waited at a corner. we all regrouped and stopped at the market for more food/drink. I didn’t have much of an appetite…I honestly just wanted to go home. WRONG THINKING. because we were far from home, and I had no idea what they had in store back in sausalito. fairfax photo, taken by justin, while waiting for the other 2:
the route back through fairfax towards sausalito was standard, and we took all the normal roads. unfortunately, there was one collision involving the godspeed and pac bikes rider. it happened so fast, I’m still not completely sure what happened, but from the little bit I did see, it seemed like the godspeed rider’s pedal caught the pedal of the pac bikes guy, who ended up going down pretty hard. he smashed his tailbone into the ground and was in a bit of pain initially. justin was to my left when the accident happened, and was headed straight towards the collision, he jammed his brakes, and skidded in front of me. I freaked out and hit my brakes, and pulled towards the shoulder of the road. I put my bike on the ground and signaled to cars to go around. we stopped for a second, to let everyone get their bearings. mr. pac bikes said he was okay to ride home, and his bike was a bit scuffed, but otherwise, fine.
we all took it easy climbing camino alto, and back towards sausalito. accidents happen…and sometimes to the best of riders. I’ve been in a handful of accidents, some by my own hand, others that I couldn’t have controlled. I felt for both parties. it was an unfortunate move by the godspeed rider, since he moved left towards the pac bikes rider. but it happened, and none of us could’ve done anything about it. we were in sausalito when travis abruptly turned right onto a steep section of road that ran parallel to the main bike path through downtown. it was by far the steepest thing I’ve ever seen and climbed. on a 23t rear, nonetheless…we stopped at one point to let pac bikes and justin catch up, but they never did, and we figured they took a different route, so we kept going. oh, and this is when I found out my front tire had a sidewall tear. the tube was bubbling out of the tire, and I asked travis what he thought. bottom line, the tire is dead. it made it through some rough roads over the past couple months, and there were already multiple cuts on it. so I guess it was time…
the road touched the highway, and headed back towards sausalito, where there was more technical residential descents that eventually led back onto the main road out of sausalito. I found godspeed and travis waiting for me on the newly paved off-chute. we headed down, and under the golden gate, back around towards the bike side. I lost them on the bridge, and headed my own way back towards downtown. I didn’t see justin or pac bikes, either.
longest, most grueling ride. so many technical climbs and descents. I’ve never ridden with such strong riders.
I’ve got work to do!

I think this is the first time I’ve ever ditched a double muir after already going once around. my right knee is just annoying me, now. it’s been tilting inwards, and I’m sure I need to have it adjusted with cleat shims. I spent the majority of the ride trying to push straight down, but came to the conclusion it just wasn’t going to happen. the angle my foot makes with the pedal just isn’t working, and now it’s causing a bit of discomfort which could lead to who knows what.
on a lighter note, I saw travis, justin, gabe, jonathan, and some other folks pedaling their way out of sausalito as I was starting my ride. got a hilarious call from travis afterwards telling me to wake up earlier to ride. LOL.
there’s a ride tomorrow I want to go to, but if the knee says no, then I’m going to hold back and rest. so we will see in the morning.

back to basics, double muir woods. it was foggy and wet at different points of the ride because of the elevation but at least I didn’t catch up to any cars on the descents into muir woods and mill valley. I ate enough gel this time around and felt solid for the majority of the ride. my right knee started acting up on the last climb out, so I eased up the pace. it’s time to get my cleats adjusted, that’s for sure.
someone hollered at me through sausalito, who was it? he was wearing a freewheel kit as well. hope you had a good ride!

7am, central coffee, off of the panhandle. travis rolled up and got a morning pick-me-up inside the cafe.
travis was talking to gabe about his power output readings, I think. I kind of want a power meter of some sort…I want to be cool, too…
we climbed camino alto, did a half paradise and strawberry, and headed home. travis kept a wicked pace up the climb, cat2 heroics!
had a great time, thanks for inviting me out. and we beat the heat, oh YA!
my legs felt trashed this morning but I still wanted to head out with justin for the double muir I planned the night before. so we headed out, and the weather was ideal – not too windy and a little bit sunny. we caught cars on all the descents but we still got a good ride in with ~2500ft of climbing. I was tired yesterday, but now I’m really tired, HAHA.
oh, and justin was pointing at a stuffed animal bear at the side of the road. he wanted to take it home for his wife, but I told him it could have rabies. he ended up not taking it. I’m such a good friend…
it’s looking nice outside, iconic san francisco summer weather. get on my local level!

met up with justin, joseph, kevin, and naveen today for alpine dam. it was probably the windiest ride I’ve ever done, there was a constant 15-20mph westward wind the entire time. I still had a great time, just had to watch descents and the pillars on the bridge.
as I understand it, joseph is the founder of house of commons, a brand base around premium street wear and other boutique items. he’ll be starting a small cycling team in 2011, which kevin will be a part of. joseph is cat3 and the others are cat4. they’ve got the speed to back it up!
good ride guys, hopefully we can ride again soon!

this is how far we made it. we got to the top of the first climb into alpine dam from the fairfax side, and I turned around to wait up from justin when I heard a huge POP! my heart sunk. a flat. we pulled off and took a closer look at the tire. it was gashed from the sidewall to almost the middle of the tire. must’ve been a sharp rock, F*CKING ROCKS. COME ON.
justin busted out a clif bar wrapper, and we put it in the tire from the inside, held with a bit of rubber cement. swapped tubes, and put the wheel back on. we figured it’d be risky riding the rest of the ride with a tire running on about 50psi, held together with a wrapper and some glue. so we hobbled it all the way down, back into fairfax. climbed and descended camino alto, home bound. and just after we beat all the hard parts of the ride, with only flat riding out to sausalito left, it blew out a second time.
we had just pulled onto the sidewalk from the gas station at the corner, and my rear went flat. there’s justin making the call for a pickup. out of tubes, energy, and out of fight.
wasn’t our day, I guess. big, big thanks to justin and maggie, my saviors! time to crush hard next week to make up for this mess.

I opted for another double muir woods today. caught cars on the second round of descents…as expected on a weekend. lots of cyclists out today, but not many going the same direction as me. caught up to josh from mission cycling on my way back and we chatted a bit. he’s cat4 now, and quicker than he was a couple months back. glad to see he’s enjoying his caad9.
back to back double muirs. I’m just a bit tired. looking forward to alpine dam tomorrow though. it’s gonna be awesome.
