no one needs a money tree if they have a bagel tree.  seriously.

back in the day, kids weren’t cool unless they read every single captain underpants’.  the abandoned coloring books is a bit disturbing.  the kid didn’t even color inside the lines.

oh, so this was a good story.  I witnessed a guy on a chrome bianchi pista, white fyxation pedals, hold fast straps, drops, and yellow bar tape circling the top of taylor street.  he waited until all the cars were gone, and proceeded to “bomb” down it.  he couldn’t skid, and kept gaining speed, chanting a series of cuss words as he blew through the t-intersection, as well as the next street down.  I think he ended up turning down a side street or something, I couldn’t see/hear him after 2 blocks down.  definitely giving cyclists a good name around the city, no doubt.

where is the owner of this backpack now…

when a bigger company owns a smaller company, waiting lobbies usually look something like this.  all business with calm, neutral colors.  I was here to interview with a staffing firm called the creative group, which is part of robert half international.

I had a chance to write my name and the date about 10 times in a row.

the view from the 10th floor.

then I saw a cyclist in a hammer nutrition kit heading down washington, up to powell.  he had the bergamo bibs and not the voler ones, hmm.  and he was riding a cannondale systemsix, I think.  possibly my alter ego, doppelganger.  luckily, we didn’t make eye contact, because it would’ve caused a black hole.  that’s what happens when doppelgangers meet.  didn’t you see black swan?

new may wah, where all your asian produce dreams come true.

costco, where all bulk food item dreams come true.

there are only 2 words that you need to read: “euro” and “lifestyle”.  price, description, and actual item detail no longer matter.  the cost of being euro extends to home furnishing, and price is always irrelevant.  euro is a bicycle, mental, and decorative state of mind.  embrace it.

then randomly, I saw this guy in the parking lot.  he was reading a book, deep in thought.  I guess when the outside world is too much to bear, and your house isn’t a viable option, costco’s concrete parking lot is the obvious solution.  obviously.

san francisco at it’s finest.  not euro enough to be euro, but not normal enough to be normal.

hell yes, I vacuum concrete.  what else am I going to do with an abandoned bissell?  their continental team is strong, and so are their upright vacuums.  this thing sucked up a couple pounds of miscellaneous rocks, dust, and debris in the garage.  pro.

misty.

I guess the end of summer is approaching.  the fog starts rolling in heavy at 5pm+, then sticks around until the next day at around 11am.  it’s like this almost everyday.  and then some days, the fog is so thick and misty, it makes everything damp.  luckily, the warmer climate in marin means that there isn’t too much precipitation on the ground, but on the way back, it’s always a dirty mess.  granted, not as bad as cyclocross, but the sandy, grimy, damp, and uncomfortable feeling of being hit with water from your tires isn’t ideal or pleasant.

paradise loop was good though.  the legs are feeling better, and I’m glad I took yesterday off.  it sucks not having a big aerobic engine, but I’m hoping that by starting with a clean slate, I’ll be back soon enough, climbing better than I was when I was at my best earlier in the season.  oh, and then I saw this random guy heading out:

oh, just eugene hood – not like it means much now, but he was in mash.  and people can hum and ha about it, but in reality, when that film first dropped, the majority of the world was stunned.  “you can ride a bike with one gear, no brakes, down san francisco hills?  you’re nuts!  (and now suddenly, I have the urge to buy a fixed gear)”.  and I still feel like he’s somewhat of a “celebrity” in the cycling community, even though he might not be too fast or super serious about riding.  hell, I don’t even think anyone recognizes him.  surprisingly enough, he was riding a specialized tarmac sl3 with what looked to be shimano dura-ace 7800.  he lives in baltimore now, but is back here visiting for a week or so, heading down to san diego on wednesday.  we chopped it up for a second, I hadn’t seen him in a long time.  and in case you forgot, the guy has like two yamaguchi track bikes, a cannondale track, a pair of reynolds unidirectional 66mm carbon clincher rims – the sdv66′s (totally jacked that idea from me), and probably four more yamaguchi bikes I’m forgetting about.  either way, it’s hard to hate the guy when he’s friendly.  damn you for being friendly.  good seeing you out, though.  maybe we can do an easy ride before you leave!

it actually wasn’t there when I was heading out this morning.  but I saw it on my way back from a paradise loop and was intrigued.  it made for a much better shot than a picture in tiburon.  I have to mix it up a bit, or else riding just gets boring.  there was a haphazard looking spinney ride to the left, as well, but the carnival operator guy started looking at me as if I were plotting something against the kids.  and that’s my cue…

anyway, the ride itself was the same as other days.  my legs are starting to feel a little better every day, but my body is still trying to cope with being on a bike for a couple hours at a time.  I’m hoping to do a couple more weeks of lower-intensity riding before diving into lots of climbing.  just in time for my powertap wheelset as well, which unfortunately isn’t showing up until next monday.  oh well, the wait is always a test of patience.

after taking yesterday off to fully recovery from the mystery side pain, I woke up this morning in pursuit of some decent mileage on paradise loop in tiburon.  I kept the pace much lighter than tuesday’s ride, focusing on a smooth, spinney cadence.  of course, as I made the turn onto the bridge, I saw maurice tailing some other cyclists.  we chatted for a bit across the foggy, damp bridge.  he had spent some time in greece, and had been off the bike for a short while, which was quite the contrast to my month off with various knee problems.  anyway, he was heading across to ride muir woods, a ride I really wanted to do…but I had to resist, my base fitness needed a lot of work.  we dropped into sausalito, and as he slowed to get some coffee, I kept riding towards the beginning of the loop.  good seeing you out maurice, I’ll hit you up when I’m not riding like a snail!

the ride started off normal enough, a bit foggy with peaks of sunlight beaming through.  then somewhere along the way, I felt something in my jersey.  no wait, now it’s under my base layer.  yea, it was a bee.  I stopped pedaling, looking for a place to slow down.  I started hitting my chest, trying to kill it  – not sure if this was a good idea or not, but oh well.  I was able to grab it through my base layer, but not before it stung me briefly in 2 areas.  I shook out my clothes, and it fell on the asphalt, dead and crushed, the stinger still attached.  sorry buddy.

I continued to ride with an annoying pain on my chest.

1 loop complete.  I felt drained, but wanted to make my time out there worth it, so I opted for another 20 mile loop (which would make the total ride distance about 70 miles).  so, I went around again.  my legs burned and my calves felt like they were a pedal revolution away from seizing up.  it was pretty horrible, I felt like trash, but kept riding steadily with a high cadence.  at one point, I was stretching my back, and my jersey got caught on the stack of spacers I have above my stem.  luckily, no one saw, but that was definitely not pro.  that’s what I thought about for the rest of the ride, and I planned on swinging by freewheel to see if they could chop it while I waited.  I crawled back into the city, through the presidio, and stopped in.

dustin was able to cut it right then and there, which was awesome.  “hey, make a pose,” I said.  “man, this better not go on the internet.”  “ha, too late.”  I also caught up with travis, who spent the last weekend up in bend, oregon, placing 4th overall in the cascade cycling classic in the cat2 men’s.  pro is pro.

buddy!

anyway, I’m stoked that the fork was chopped, thanks again, dustin.  expect a proper bike photo (or maybe two?) by the end of today.
