winter must be close.

the air is becoming more crisp everyday, with overnight lows that hover around 45* (7*C).  I’m sure the temperature in other places in the world are much more severe, but for san francisco, that’s “cold”.  riding in the fall weather isn’t any more technical than any other time of year, however layering up is definitely helpful.  I put on my gore-tex paclite shell today, and to my surprise, it was the perfect barrier against the chilling wind.  my feet stayed toasty inside some windtex shoe covers – they’re definitely not waterproof, but against the wind, they’re perfect.

there were some cyclists out today, but only singles and doubles, all layered to their faces with various fleece and warmers.  I saw a road cyclist at the end of the bridge as I was heading out that looked awfully familiar…I think he was wearing a previous generation mashsf kit.  and then on my way through mill valley to get to 4 corners, several cyclists that also looked familiar caught up to me.  they kept going straight as I made a left, and I thought they would catch a later turn down into the residential road, but I never saw them behind me, or in front.  maybe they were just riding through mill valley, who knows.  it bothers me that I can’t pinpoint where I’ve seen them before.  oh well, considering they’re out on a brisk tuesday morning ride, chances are I’ll see them again on another morning.

the rest ride went well, there was a sharp bite of wind behind muir woods, but past that, the weather was sunny and a bit warmer.  I headed home with a big smile on my face.

enjoy the ride.

muir woods friday.

11-5_muir-woods

has it really been almost 2 weeks since I rode muir woods?  sure seems like it.  I actually rode the first half of it climbing up to the ranger station on sunday, but didn’t do the descent or the climb out of muir woods, so I guess it doesn’t count.  the southbound wind was strong again, which made for a grueling ride to say the least.  there was a low-laying fog that covered most of marin the entire duration of the ride, but it wasn’t cold.  it was thick and humid at some points, I thought the sky was going to start pouring rain soon.  but thankfully, it didn’t.

I had the road to myself for a majority of the ride, there weren’t too many cars or cyclists out.  I think I counted about 6 heading in my direction, and not too much more heading towards san francisco.  I do have to say that attempting to count the people I see on the road helps distract me from some of the more boring aspects of riding alone.  singing or humming songs also seems to help.  the hardest part for me is zoning out the pain, but still maintaining a keen eye on the road.  I wasn’t thinking about riding, while I was riding.  I was thinking about the food I was going to eat afterwards, how the rest of my day would pan out, and how nice it was to have the road to myself.  ah, riding!

on the backside of muir woods, heading towards mill valley, I saw two road guys ahead of me.  they were wearing bike nook kits, and I instantly remembered the conversation I overheard a few weeks back.  the “firemen, what do they do?” conversation that came from the bike nook crew.  they might’ve been joking, and I probably shouldn’t have listened in, but its affected how I see them now.  not in a good or bad way, it just makes me think back to that conversation they were having.  I passed these guys, said ‘hello’, and they said ‘hi’ back.  at least they were friendly.

hoping for no rain this weekend, but according to weather underground, it’s coming on sunday.  still not completely sure what I want to do tomorrow, I was thinking about doing bofax or alpine dam.  we’ll see how my legs feel tomorrow morning.

I hit up muir woods today, as a replacement for paradise loop.  they’ve been working on repaving the surface around paradise drive, so it would’ve been the same scraped asphalt ride as last week.  minus the rain, of course.  it was sunny out, but a bit windy.  on the backside of muir woods it was miserable, lots and lots of headwind coming from mill valley.  but at least it wasn’t wet out.

on my way back from muir woods, I spotted two guys on road bikes, both wearing backpacks.  they were heading towards sausalito from the bike path.  I was slowly catching up to them, when the guy in the back doing the drafting turned off.  when I came up to pass the guy in front, I’m pretty sure he thought I was the same guy that was drafting off of him, because he instantly jumped on my wheel.  and he stayed there.  for miles.  he rode on my wheel through downtown sausalito, along side the waterfront, on the initial climbs and the climbs up to the bridge, all the way across the bridge.  I really should’ve said something.  free rides aren’t cool, but who’s really benefiting from it in the end?  it sure isn’t him, he’s saving a ton of energy.  at least I got a good workout in.  a couple of points along the way, I heard him drop back a hair.  maybe it was because of that backpack he was wearing.  I should’ve dropped him…oh well.  it wasn’t worth the extra effort.

his isn’t a race, bro.  you’re commuting.  chill out.

spotted riders outbound: 9+ (I lost count, wasn’t paying attention…ha)

spotted inbound: 4

pedal pushing.

10-9_muir-woods

it’s fleet week here in san francisco, which means lots of people out, and lots of cars.  sections of crissy fields and the marina greens were closed off, funneling pedestrians onto the multi-use path.  it was only an issue while I was heading back, and even then, surprisingly, I had no close calls with anyone.  it probably helped that most of the people on the path were runners.  the blue angels weren’t coming on until later, I’m assuming that’s the reason why there weren’t too many people out yet.

I went for a slow cadence, pedal mashing ride around muir woods today.  just one time around, so that I could be back sooner, before the tourist/club rush on the bridge and paths.  right when the bike path starts, along side the highway in sausalito, a guy randomly jumped out from behind a tree in the parking lot of mike’s bikes.  I slammed my brakes and said, “WHOA, SH*T!”.  my rear wheel skidded and I almost came to a full stop, inches from his hippie attire.  he continue to jog across the path to get his dog, tied to a pole at the side of a highway…what the hell.  scared the daylights out of me.

the rest of the ride was mellow.  I saw 2 guys riding in the middle of the road going up to 4 corners, and as I passed them, one of the guys said, “watch out, cops will pull you over for speeding!”.  I was slightly confused, because he could’ve been talking to his friend, but either way, I kept riding assuming the comment wasn’t for me.  I was burying my legs in pain, keeping my cadence lower than usual, making sure to practice torquing on the drivetrain.  it was awesome, painful…I really do enjoy mixing it up on rides.

then, on my way back I saw 2 guys riding side-by-side, the guy on the left sure looked a lot like ben…black kit with pink accents, maybe some deep section rims?  we passed each other so fast, but I’m pretty sure it was him.  oakleys and all.  if so, HOLLA!

oh, and from 1-4pm yesterday, the blue angels were practicing their flight routines over san francisco.  I’m pretty sure they use the embarcadero and SOMA areas for turn arounds, because of all the open space.  they must, because they flew clear over my house to get there over, and over again.  here’s what I could see from my window, in terms of practice stunts (not flyovers)

pretty dope.  I might go to the roof later to see what’s going on.

6am.

10-5_muir-woods

left the house at 6am sharp, heading for muir woods.  it was pitch black out, so my dinotte 200 lumen headlight lit the way.  definitely glad I spent the money on a good light, it’ll come in handy over the next couple months for those early morning rides.

there was no wind on the embarcadero, no wind on the marina greens, and zero leading up to the bridge.  and that’s how it was for the majority of the ride.  there was a low fog that covered most of mill valley, but it burned off by time I got to 4 corners.  the descent and backside of muir woods was freezing cold though, definitely need to bring some papers for insulation in my jersey.  by this time, I’m assuming people were starting to head to work for the day, because I saw more and more cars in the road.  the rest of the ride was good, I made it home in about 2:20.  I need to tweak my morning schedule a bit more…but the routine has been put into motion.

maiden voyage.

10-2_muir-woods

left at around 7:45am with the intent of hitting muir woods.  I actually tried to get up a bit earlier to meet up with travis from the shop, but 7am in the haight is just too early for me, right now at least.  there was a breast cancer walk going on, which crossed paths with cyclists on the bridge and a couple other points, but luckily, the roads were open and clear.  then who do I see coming into sausalito from the bike path, travis.  “MR. SLEEPY TEDDYBEAR!” he yelled as I flew by.  owned me…darn cat2 heroes…

anyway, the rest of the ride went pretty smooth, had the road to myself for the most part and didn’t dig myself too deep.  I rode muir and a half (2nd part was just up to 4 corners from mill valley).  I was mainly trying to get a feel for the wheelset and new range of gears up top.  the difference from my reynolds to this pair is immediately noticeable.  they drag so hard in the air, there is absolutely no aerodynamic advantage with them.  however, on the flip side of this, having a spokey, low rim profile allows me to go no-hands once again without having to worry about crosswinds blowing the bike off the road (what a great feeling).  accelerations feel laggy and slow, and the weight of the wheels really become noticeable when climbing.  not so much with the front wheel, but the rear.  getting it to spin up, and stay at the speed I’d normally keep with the other wheelset takes more effort in general.

not sure if you can see, but if you look really close at the wheels, the 2 nipples around the valve are red, the rest are black. it’s all in the details!

one of the last.

9-29_muir-woods

the heatwave is dying down now, which makes for perfect riding weather.  high 60′s, low 70′s on todays ride, one of the last muir woods rides I’ll be doing this year on the reynolds wheelset.  yesterday, my 105 hubs arrived, and they’re scheduled to be laced on friday at the shop.  hopefully, my look pedal spindles are there as well, it’d be nice knocking all the bike tasks down in one day, but if they’re not, then they’re not.  either way, I’d have to bring the wheels back after a couple hundred miles to get them retensioned.  NO BIG DEAL.

opted for a single muir today, partially because of the heat, but mostly because I’ve been off the bike for a couple of days.  had a nice time in the sun rolling on the reynolds…I’m going to miss the deepness and carbon bling, but it’ll all be worth it when I can throw them back on next season for races.

oh yea, and freewheel has a 12-25t ultegra 6700 cassette waiting for me for the training wheelset.  I really have to remember to bring those extra 7900 links…

“uh, okay, people?”

9-25_1.5-muir-woods

who remembers that epic scene in pineapple express?  ha!  I left this morning NOT expecting to run into several hundred cyclists on a charity ride of some sort.  their route started at the embarcadero, went across the bridge, onto the bike path through sausalito, and dropped them off on highway 1 on the other side of mill valley.  every road they were on was congested with angry drivers lined up as far as the eye could see.  climbing out of muir woods back towards mill valley the first time, I was convinced they had all descended the hill already.  wrong.  as I was coming over the other side, hundreds more cyclists were clawing their way towards highway 1.  I thought it wouldn’t be an issue for me, since I’d be the one descending from this point.  well, wrong again actually.  drivers were constantly driving over the double yellow by more than 5 feet into my lane, forcing me to the shoulder on numerous occasion.  a couple close calls, so I decided to take it easy.

coming back around into mill valley, I decided to just say screw it, and opt for a 1.5 muir woods loop instead of a full 2.  my legs were jello from yesterday’s double, and the heat wasn’t helping either.  one of the main roads through the mill valley homes was closed, but at least they had a detour 2 blocks ahead.  must’ve been some sort of fair or something…

riding on the weekend in itself means more people out.  riding on the weekend that happens to land in the midst of a heat wave means more people out.  riding on the weekend that theres a massive charity ride out…yea, that means more people out too.

at least I got some good climbing in.  that’s all I care about.

9-24_double-muir-woods

with morning temperatures rising from 60* on up to 70*+, it definitely seems like summer is back for the next couple days.  apparently it’ll peak monday at 83*, but who knows.  leaving earlier for rides and proper hydration are key to beating the heat.  today, I headed out across the bridge to do a double muir woods.  on my way out, I saw travis coming back into the city.  we exchanged a low 5.  you know it’s going to be a good ride when you low 5 a cat2 cyclist.  and surprise, it was an awesome ride.

there were a couple cyclists out and about, but they were sparse and far apart.  of course, lots of cars on the roads, sometimes bumper to bumper at some points on the way back.  the route through mill valley up to 4 corners was quiet and well shaded from the sunlight, so I put down the pain all the way through, both times.  the descent had a couple cars on it, but passing them on the inside turns was pretty straight forward and easy, I didn’t get caught up behind them for more than a couple seconds, which was nice for a change.  speaking of being behind cars on descents, that reminds me…I need to keep checking my swiss stop pads for wear.  I’ve tweaked with the barrel adjusters quite a bit since I’ve had the bike, partially because the cables have stretched a tad, and also because the pads are wearing down.  curious to see how they’ll brake with the training wheelset.

the bridge was pretty quiet considering the weather was spectacular.  people actually stuck to the sides of the bridge to let cyclists pass back and forth.  how nice.

oh to the guy that asked me for a bike pump for his town cruiser when I was getting water behind mike’s bikes: sorry, no schrader valve on my pump!  luckily for him, mike’s bikes was opening in half an hour and they could fix his flat.  not even sure if he had a spare tube or a patch kit on him.  hmm.

get mistified.

9-18_muir-woods

voted heaviest mist ever, 1 out of 1 riders agree.  the weather’s been really interesting, to say the least.  at night, the fog rolls in, but it stays humid.  a thick mist forms and just makes the roads wet enough to be sketchy.  and the mist stays until the afternoon sun burns it off.  this morning it was particularly thick and warm (haha!).  I was soaked through all my clothes by time I got to the top of 4 corners, but because of the humidity, my temperature was stable.  it was actually comfortable enough to ride through.  I just did 1 loop though, I couldn’t bear to have wet feet any longer.  and the descents were sketch-mcgee.  it might as well have been raining out, the mist was so thick.

for the most part, there was no one out.  actually, I take that back.  I got stuck behind this group of 10 riders that were riding 2 and 3 across the entire width of the bike path on the bridge as I was heading out to marin.  luckily, it wasn’t the entire span of the bridge, just from the second pillar to the parking lot.  but really though?  creeping at 10mph across the bridge was just mind-blowing.  they were barely pedaling.  but after that point, the roads were empty.  I think cyclists were heading out later because of the wet roads.  or maybe they were sleeping in, oblivious of the road conditions.

9-18_muir-woods2

here, have some cliche red balloons coming over a small, grassy hill in crissy fields.  the clouds only look scary.  they’re really not.
