went to freewheel today after the ride, dropped off my caad9 road bike for some 2.0 treatment.  the road bike will be getting a small makeover: 7900 shifters, front and rear derailleurs, cassette, reynolds strike carbon clinchers, swiss stop yellow pads, and…I think that’s about it actually.  oh and checking the tension of both wheelsets, the training one as well as the reynolds.  I forgot to tell them to swap the enduro ceramic hybrid derailleur pulleys from my ultegra RD onto the new 7900 one.  I should really stop by the shop tomorrow after my ride and tell them though, instead of calling them, so we’re all on the same page.

oh yea, what’s that in the picture, you ask?  why, just the rear hub of my custom wheelset:

- custom drilled phil wood low flange track hub, 20h powdercoated black

- titanium axle, titanium cups, titanium bolts, titanium lockring

- carbonite bearings

- slr cog

welcome to the land of perma-smiles.

did your face just fall off?  because mine did when travis tossed this at me.  yes, it’s a phil wood SLR cog, and lighter than anything I’ve ever felt before, in terms of cogs.  the eai gold medal cog I had on my pista concept was NOTHING compared to this.  the quality, the weight, everything.  the fact it’s forged and hand polished, there is no doubt in my mind this cog is going to just spin up like a wind up toy.  I can’t begin to imagine how ridiculously light and fast this wheelset is going to be.

while I was at freewheel, dustin threw something at me from the back of the shop.  a continental tire they want me to test out, called the supersport.  it’s a wirebead clincher that’s foldable, with LOTS of rubber.

now I have to run to the shop and get a spare tube before heading out for a paradise loop.  maybe just 1 loop today, followed by twin peaks.  or maybe I’ll stick to the usual 2.  we’ll see how I feel when I get out there today.

phil woe.

yesterday, I dropped off the cannondale track at freewheel hayes to have it tuned up.  tension on the rear wheel was a bit slack, and there’s been a slight creaking sound coming from the drivetrain.  figured it was the chain, since it was the same one used on the initial samson build months ago.  and sram pc-7x chains are cheap enough to change semi-annually – better to be safe than sorry, wearing out drivetrain components on something as preventable as that seems easy.

after I dropped off the bike, I went for a walk down to the polo fields to watch the start of eugene’s race, king of the hill.  long story short, I was sucked into running a checkpoint with sean chan.  we held it down at stussy for the 8 racers.

there weren’t too many guys that came by, and we ended up splitting after a brief 20 minutes.  at the top of twin peaks, the finish, it was fergus (messenger from sf), mark (guy from southbay-ish), and bennett (YOU ALREADY KNOW).  $100 cash prize for 1st, pushbike stash was 2nd place, and i minus d shirts/stickers for everyone else.  thought there’d be more racers, but I guess the 90mi mixed terrain alleycat took some riders away too.  oh well, glad there were no accidents and everyone, for the most part, had a decent time.  glad I came out.

went back to freewheel to check up on the caad, and long story short, dustin ended up swapping out every drivetrain component trying to isolate the creak – big whoop, it was the magnesium-titanium phil wood bottom bracket.  apparently, the titanium spindle needs some sort of maintenance, something only phil wood can do.  so, a standard phil bb, with regular spindle, sleeve, and bearings was quieter than my super epic, awesome bb.  go figure.  overall, I’m not impressed with the bottom bracket in terms of reliability…however on the flip side of that, the carbonite bearings and lightness of the spindle assembly with the mag-ti is unparalleled.  they’re sending the bb back.

I wonder when it’ll be back in my bike…

commuter woes.

not complaining that it blew out, just sayin’.  I knew it’d blow out, I had already threaded 5 spots on the continental race, however I thought I’d be able to ride to work at least, so I could get a tire at the shop.

trust in dustin’s wheel building skills, phil wood high flange hubs, and velocity b43 triple-walled rims.  nothing but faith.
