I did what felt like a few somersaults. I don’t know where the car came from. Before I knew it, Flecha was on the ground and there was nothing I could do. I landed on the fence and I looked at my legs and thought, ‘Is this what cycling is about?’ I have the polka-dot jersey but I’m going to spend the rest day in a lot of pain.

johnny’s legs today, minus the bandages and fruit wrap. raw, cut, and a whole lot of pain we’re not seeing/feeling because we currently don’t hold the polka-dot jersey from the tour. we’ll see if he can hold the jersey tomorrow, he currently has 22 mountain points, leading over voeckler’s (europcar) 17. I have a feeling there’s going to be an attack from leopard trek and/or saxobank. photo from cycling news.
also notice the gel grippers on the bibs folded up so they don’t pull on his skin. it’s hard to imagine how much pain he’s in riding some of the biggest hills in the world with the fastest riders in the world. so pro. photo from bike radar.

but then someone from cycling news had to take a picture of george hincapie (bmc) and his leg to make us mortals cry at night. this is the vascularity that dreams within dreams are made out of. enough veins to power a separate human being, let alone race a bicycle. spotted on big ring riding!
